playwright; screenwriter To All the Boys I've Loved Before
Sofia Alvarez is a playwright and screenwriter. She recently adapted Jenny Han’s bestselling novel To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before which premiered on Netflix in August 2018. She is currently working on the sequel, PS I Still Love You also for Netflix. She is writing a film adaptation of Rebecca Scherm’s novel Unbecoming and an US version of the Spanish film, Promoción Fantasma (Ghost Graduation) for Fox. Work in television includes the first two seasons of Man Seeking Woman (FXX) and the first season of Sirens (USA). Selected plays include Between Us Chickens (South Coast Rep, Ensemble Studio Theater LA), Friend Art (Second Stage), The Fish Bowl (Juilliard), and NYLON (BTP / Theaterlab). With composer Daniel Roland Tierney she adapted a musical version of William Steig’s classic children’s book, Amos & Boris. It premiered at South Coast Rep in May 2018. She is the founding Artistic Director of Blockchain Theater Project (btproject.us) Alvarez teaches in the department of dramatic writing at NYU Tisch. She is a graduate of Bennington College and The Juilliard School’s Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program. She has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts.
