David Gleeson

writer Tolkien, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, The Grimm Legacy, Down to a Sunless Sea; writer/director Don't Go, The Front Line, Cowboys & Angels
David Gleeson hails from a family of cinema-owners in rural Ireland and attributes his career path to a deep childhood immersion in movies. Following a 5 year stint in the UK North Sea oil industry, followed by another 2 in the Arctic Circle, David made his feature film debut as writer and director with COWBOYS & ANGELS ('03). The film charmed critics and audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. THE WASHINGTON POST called it “Witty, sweet and flat-out adorable” while THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE commented “Stack COWBOYS against most of the fare American studios offer young adults and it's meatier by far." David’s next film, THE FRONT LINE opened in cinemas across Ireland in Summer ‘06. THE SUNDAY INDEPENDENT wrote “David Gleeson has delivered a terrific film that reminds us what big screens were made for and it deserves to be a smash … Bristles with freshness and cinematic sophistication.” VARIETY called the film “Impressive … Shocking … Sustains high levels of suspense while delivering an emotional wallop”. Following THE FRONT LINE, David sold his spec screenplay - the epic time-travel adventure, THE END OF HISTORY - to Sony Pictures and Original Film. He followed this a year later with the Morgan Freeman-attached DOWN TO A SUNLESS SEA which he sold to Focus Features. Shifting genres, David then sold his screenplay ’TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, a fresh take on the perennial Christmas poem, to Paramount Pictures and also wrote RED GIANT for 20th Century Fox. In 2013, David pitched his take on TOLKIEN to Fox Searchlight and so, another movie was born. In addition to TOLKIEN (released worldwide, May '19), David also returned to helming duties with the feature film DON’T GO, which he co-wrote, and which was released in the US by IFC Films in Oct '18. David continues to work at a prolific pace and has many projects in various stages of development, including THAT'S ALL RIGHT, MAMA which he intends shooting in Summer '20, and THE GRIMM LEGACY which he is currently writing for Walt Disney Pictures.
